6:11 am
okay you can make a good cleaner with a couple drops of dish soap. water, put it in the spray bottle and use that. if you really want to clean things like this is a -- this looks like real butcher block. and i have one of these at home. that is what i do. you don't have to buy the fancy stuff. i take a lemon and take either salt or baking soda. >> okay. >> now baking soda when it gets moist will not scratch. when it's dry, it might. >> it has a little bit of grit to. >> just a little bit of grit. and i do this on my butcher block with the lemon. and it will clean it and it will bleach it a little bit. if you have a little spot like this and you put some of the juice on there and let it sit. >> look at it bubbling up. >> see that's because that's -- lemon which is citric acid and baking soda. you can do this with the lemon

juice. baking soda. this is to keep the drains free flowing not just unclog. if you do this once a week you won't have a problem. >> do this once a week and pour it down. >> about half a cup. oh! >> look at that. >> cool. >> neato. much -- good science experiment. >> but that's what's going on in your drink. >> okay. >> so you let that sit for about 10 or 15 minutes and then turn on the hot water for about a minute because you want it to go all the way through the plumbing system. >> okay. >> and if you do this preventative, then you won't have to call a plumber. >> does it drive you crazy when you go to the big box stores and you see these organic cleaners for tens and 20s of dollars and you can do that at home. >> and vinegar is fabulous for -- i know if you have stainless steel over there. i hate it because i mean i love the oven itself. but stainless steel?
6:13 am
>> yeah it shows everything. >> it shows everything. so to clean stainless steel, windows, mirrors, again, you can use straight rubbing alcohol or vinegar. >> okay. okay. >> and the newspaper. oh my gosh is that the "washington post"? >> it is. >> i wonder if i'm in there today. >> it's a new way to recycle right? >> it is. now some people don't like this because they say it gets newsprint on their hands. but wash your hands. or wear rubber gloves. but what it does is it will really will shine both sides. the trick is, is when you're cleaning the windows on one side do this. >> okay. >> on the other side, go up and down. >> okay. >> then you can tell which side has a streak on it. >> okay. so we've got about 30 seconds left. do you have one more tip? and one more tip. >> baking soda. >> okay. >> baking soda and lemon actually can be a beauty product. >> really? >> you don't have to buy all the scrubs that they have. >> uh-huh. >> put some baking soda in your hand. i use my facial soap.

sometimes we'll add an extra detail about the story skit will appear -- and it will appear just above the information bar. then we have the lineup. it lists the next three stories in the newscast and it will move along throughout the show. it replaces that old rundown that used to be up there on the right side of your screen. the last line is the ticker. that features news, weather and other headlines. and color is a key part of the look. different types of stories, get different colors. just like those at "usa today," which is also owned by our parent company gannett. news stories are blue, weather is in yellow. sports is dark red. lifestyle is purple. tech is orange. money is green. and breaking news is bright red. travel and traffic is aqua. opinion is in gray. so we want you to tell us what do you think of the new look? log on to the wusa9 facebook page and join the conversation. i think it looks really sharp. >> it does, it's nice and clean. and as derek said uncluttered.

6:29 am
and by 5:00, 37. and one thing yolanthe the wind speeds starting at 19. -- you'll notice the wind speeds starting at 19. all the wind being driven by the storm which passed to the south leaving us with very little if any precip around here yesterday although we are looking at some of the flurries and snow showers riding down from pennsylvania through hagueers town and frederick and even montgomery county with a couple of sprinkles and temperatures this morning, just want to show you that before we go. they are definitely on the chilly side up north. down to 29 in hagerstown and still 39 in d.c.. back in a few minutes and talking about the weekend and i have some cold air on the seven day. let you know when that's going to arrive. here's monika with timesaver traffic. in burke fire activity. burke road at ticonderoga court. watch out for the activity there in burke. other than that, actually pretty light volumes with the compensation of 66 where an -- exception of 66 where an accident was moved to the
6:30 am
shoulder. you're going i would say about 37 miles an hour past that and then it's all green. all the way through fairfax vienna and the beltway. a lifelong now 395 near seminary road and as you can see, lanes are open. traffic is moving really well leaving the beltway right up to the 14th street bridge. back to the maps, this time to the other side of town. no problems on 270 and again light volumes 109 to 121 down to gaithersburg and bethesda. a live look outside. planning to head here on the beltway at georgia avenue. more traffic coming up in a few minutes. back to you guys. thanks monika. time now to see what the partners at "cbs this morning" are doing. >> i know they're getting ready for inauguration and we hope to see them in person when they come to washington next week. norah o'donnell is with us this morning. >> good morning mike and andrea. two years ago it was "60 minutes" that broke the story of lance armstrong's doping. now that armstrong has admitted cheating scott pelley will tell us with he thinks is missing from the confession. also jonathan bauders is a
6:31 am
former teammate who testified against armstrong. he'll be here in studio 57 for his reaction. plus, the secret planning that went into american airlines' expensive makeover. lots to talk about when we see you at 7:00. >> we'll be watching. thank you. the excitement is stirring. the 57th presidential inauguration and the crowds are expected. >> and your noses are running. already. four years ago there was a significant number of cold related emergencies and doctors want to keep them to a minimum this time around. delia goncalves is here to talk about that. she is live on capitol hill and it's a little chilly right now. good morning. >> reporter: the colder it gets the bigger my scarf gets. that's an i. case how cold it is so far but oh goodness going to be dressing the layers on monday. nothing as cold thankfully as it was four years ago but doctors are still saying listen. going to be cold. take care of yourself when you come down. because you're going to be here for a long period of time.
6:32 am
and that's the difference. it will be cold, but it will be cold for a long time. so the first tip that doctors are giving us dress in layers of course. and make sure that first layer closest to your skin is not cotton, rather a synthetic wicking material that will help retain the heat. and doctors also say you should remember to drink water. dehydration is not only an issue in the summer, it can also affect you in the cold temperature. doctors say avoid caffeine which only makes dehydration worse. >> we saw mostly cold and dehydration related episodes. and then especially during this event where there's the crowds are very big. and there's not adequate access to restrooms. >> reporter: well, not adequate access to restrooms? i've seen the port-a-potties and 12th and g., my husband works at 12th and g. and they are outside of metro center. so eight blocks away from the
6:33 am
mall. there are port-a-potties throughout the city. so you will have access to a restroom. but make sure you do have your sanitation wipes with you as well. i heard heloise was mentioning that as well. but take a look i found this great app. you can just look up inauguration and this is an app sponsored officially by the white house. and it tells -- it gives you a list of events and get this. you can even go on and click the maps if i can click it. there it is. and you see the little icon the little circle that's moving i don't know if you can see it. it gives you your exact location and it can tell you and you can pinpoint exactly where you want to find the -- a restroom, or emergency, or even where the parade route so going to be. so this -- is going to be. so this great app you know, everyone has an app nowadays and now, it seems like organizers here have learned their lesson from last inauguration's fiasco when people were stuck in tunnels and the like. they've created an app for
6:34 am
that. and hopefully folks will have an enjoyable time a little cold but a great time here on monday. >> it is 6:34. jessica doyle is back with another your money report. >> and toyota we're talking about them again. their troubles far from over. >> right, this -- this has been a saga that has been lasting for yores now about all of its problems with safety. and concerns of the like. toyota is saying that it has settled what is to be the first of wrongful death lawsuits. last month toyota agreed to a settlement worth more than $1 billion. and that's to resolve losses claiming economic losses. but hundreds more lawsuits over wrongful death still remain. this was the first case set to go to trial starting next month and it was expected to be a bellwether for the rest of the cases. wall street starts the morning at a five year high for
6:35 am
the s&p 500. here's why the markets are riding so high lately. investors have been going all in. pouring $800 billion into just if first nine days of the new year. the investors are also plowing a huge sum into international stocks this year. and it comes after yanking more than $150 billion from mutual funds last year. just because they're behind bars doesn't mean they aren't making out like bandits. according to a new government audit, prisoner tax fraud has ballooned in recent years. the report comes from the treasury inspector general for tax administration. it finds that in 2010 more than 91,000 inmates claimed more than $758 million in fraudulent refunds. that's more than double the year before. the i rest stopped most of the fraudulent refunds from actually getting into the hands of prisoners but $35 million still slipped through the cracks. and a number of fraudulent prisoner tax refunds continue to increase in 2011. and 2012. but the irs has yet to put a

number on these bogus refunds. it is amazing how this can happen. >> unbelievable. >> time to do a little bit more organizing apparently. >> don't send tax refund paperwork and forms to prisons. that might be a good way to stop that. >> if the address says -- >> you have to be clear. >> thanks jess. christopher kennedy lawford is here to talk about the new book about recovery. and the book signing he's having in our area tonight. >> there they are in our green room. former congressman patrick kennedy also here to [ ma aouer wenvedom tsee
